If you want your Smartphone to be able to read QR Codes you’ll need to have QR Code Reader software installed on it. The actual software you use will depend on the phone that you have as there isn’t a ‘one fits all solution’. Although, many of them do support a large range of mobiles
The following list is just a selection of the available QR Code Readers out there but most of the sites offer the option of downloading via PC and then transferring the file to your Smartphone, or visiting directly with your Smartphone and using its browser to download and install the Reader.
- Optiscan – Regarded by many as the best QR Code scanner for iPhones because it understands all of the new, trickier encoding types and has kept up to date with latest developments in QR code technology. Available through
- I-Nigma – Overall, I-Nigma is, probably, the most popular reader application in the world with over 150million users. It works on most of the popular smartphones.
- Quickmark – Is available for most phones but, most noticeably, has both an Android version and a Windows Mobile version
- Kaywa Reader
- Nokia – The majority of Nokia’s now come with the Nokia’s own scanning softwarepre-installed, but this one is good for N78, 6210 Navigator, N80, N96 and 6220 Classic.
- Google Zxing – Designed for the Android and iPhone, plus quite a few others. However, there’s not a version for Windows Mobile
- SnapMaze – This QR Code Reader is for Nokia, Sony Ericcson and Motorola phones.
- NeoReader – This QR Code Reader supports a good range of phones and mobile devices, including iPhone and Blackberry, and is also available as an AppStore download.
- Jaxo Systems – The Reader will run on most Java-enabled phones.
- OkoTag – This is the new one from Jaxo and supports Java, Blackberry, Windows Mobile and Android.
- Blackberry Messenger – This comes pre-installed as standard with most Blackberry’s these days.
- Upcode – This Reader offers support for a wide range of Symbian, UIQ, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Iphone and Java phones.
As I said, this is just a selection of the available QR Code Readers, so, do feel free to carry out some of your own research as to which one wil suit you and your particular Smartphone the most.
